Surprises galore at Wednesday's South Bank Sky Arts Awards, hosted by Melvyn Bragg  at London's Dorchester hotel. Kate Bush won the Pop Music category for her album 50 Words for Snow, trouncing Adele and PJ Harvey. The RSC's Matilda pinched the Theatre gong, so it was hard cheese for the much-fancied One Man Two Guvnors. And Grayson Perry was adjudged winner of the Visual Art objet (a shiny thing designed by Anish Kapoor, and presented here by Tracy Emin) ahead of Davids Chipperfield and Hockney.

Other winners included Arthur Pita's Metamorphosis (Dance), We Need to Talk About Kevin (Film), Claire Tomalin's Charles Dickens: A Life (Literature), ENO's The Damnation of Faust (Opera) and BBC1's Sherlock (TV Drama). Playwright  Michael Frayn received the Outstanding Achievement award, his chances doubtless boosted by the recent success of Noises Off, and soprano Sophie Bevan won the Times Breakthrough Award (voted for by Times readers). This was the sixteenth year of the Awards, and the second held in association with Sky Arts. Sky Arts 1 relaunches The South Bank Show with a new series starting on 27 May, following its axing by ITV in 2010 after 32 years on screen.
