Bryn Terfel creates Wales-on-Thames

Where there used to be the Faenol Festival in north Wales, now there's BrynFest at London's Southbank Centre. From Wednesday 4 July to Saturday 7 July, burly bass-baritone Bryn Terfel will host an array of musical events in a mixture of styles, including rock, opera and stage musicals. On 4 July Sîan Phillips will present The Golden Age of Broadway, in which Terfel and guests sing tunes by Bernstein, Rodgers & Hammerstein and Cole Porter. 5 July brings Opera Gala Night, where Terfel leads a quartet of singers in arias from Tosca, La Cenerentola and other works. On 6 July Gruff Rhys from Super Furry Animals headlines Rock Night, while on 7 July BrynFest ends with a day of choral singing. The afternoon performance features a 500-voice Choir of the World comprising "male singers of Welsh heritage" from five continents, and they'll perform (among other things) the world premiere of Karl Jenkins's A Hero's Journey. At 5.30pm, members of the public can gather on the Riverside Terrace to join Terfel in singing classic Welsh songs. For full details visit www.southbankcentre.co.uk [1]
