Re-united Black Sabbath announce Birmingham gig

Submitted by Peter Culshaw on Mon, 30/04/2012 - 09:37

Just announced: Black Sabbath line-up of Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler to play O2 Academy, Birmingham on Saturday 19 May. Tickets are on sale here [1] from May 4th at 9 a.m.

The heavy metal group formed in Aston in 1969 – and have reunited for a tour and have already announced a headline slot at the Download rock festival at Donington Park, Leicestershire.

Earlier it was suggested their unique place in Birmingham city’s musical history could also be celebrated with a "Black Sabbath Day" devoted to the band, if council officials follow the recommendation of a report which urged the city to cash in on the renewed interest in the band.

The Destination Birmingham document said: “Black Sabbath’s reunion and their agreement to headline Download Festival in June is an opportunity we should not miss.

“Early discussions are taking place about how best the city should celebrate this and the council should be supporting any celebrations.”

The four-piece are planning to finish writing their new album back in Birmingham, while guitarist Tony Iommi is also battling cancer.

Conservative councillor  Philip Parkin , the report’s author, said celebrating the Sabbath reunion would not only celebrate Birmingham’s musical heritage but also inspire emerging bands.

Theartsdesk reviewed [2] a four month festival to celebrate the West Midlands as the home of metal last year.
