Wholesome indie rockers succeed in scaling their sound right down

Athlete: Exploring the smaller venues

They’ve called the tour "The Hits - Stripped Back". But they weren’t all hits. More importantly, they weren’t merely stripped back either. They’d evolved. The band’s ability to write quality anthemic indie rock is undeniable. But so is the fact that sometimes it’s hard to distinguish them from a slew of other bands with awkward names and characterful voices, like Feeder or Embrace. Or Elbow. And Elbow have stolen the market share. So where does this leave Athlete? It leaves them taking a step back from the pop game, and getting excited about the sonic possibilities of making music together.

As a fan of all the awkward named bands mentioned above, Athlete have come on in leaps and bounds (no pun intended). Last night at the Union Chapel the mood was certainly one of warmth, despite the torrential rain outside. Enjoyed reading this very good review which in my opinion, was spot on.

A little belated i know but i have to agree with all that is written above & some. Saw the guys at the union & in Brighton the week before when Joel really was totally unplugged.. awesome. Also saw them at canary wharf for a totally intimate gig of which is right up there with any that i have seen by anyone. The bands appeal is stretched further by the fact that in a time when ordinary folk can not relate to the famous so to speak the band have not forgotten who they are or where they have come from. Oh & after the union gig i got the band to sign a birthday card for my wife of which they seemed very happy to do. Thanks for that Athlete & for the many hours i have spent listening to your music be it in person or ipod. May you accomplish all that you strive too... We shall enjoy watching exactly that.. Cheers
