CLEOPATRA - IDA RUBINSTEIN
An original idea by
Andris Liepa this exquisite production recounts the story of the creation o
f Fokine’s ballet Cleopatra, for Ida Rubinstein in 1909. Choreographer Pat
rick de Bana makes some great choreography in this new ballet, and has cho
sen music by composers including Glazunov, Rimsky-Korsakov, Gabriel Fauré
, Maurice Ravel and the wonderful music of new composer Omar Faruk Tekbile
k. The world premiere was staged on 28th June 2012 at Paris Champs-Elysees
Theatre to press reviews of ‘beautiful’ ‘interesting’ ‘wonderful’ ‘great wo
rk in the choreography’ ‘a real study of Egyptian style’.
SCHÉHÉRAZADE
Inspired by the book The Arabian Nights, Schéhérazade is the tragic story
of a Sultan, his favourite Zabeida and her lover the Golden Slave. The bal
let caused controversy at Paris Garnier in 1910 when the new arrangement ofthe original score was denounced by Rimsky-Korsakov’s widow. The Bakst des
igns created a sensation in the Paris world of fashion.
