About this event
A great youth orchestra and a distinguished and much-loved conductor. The programme begins with Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements, partly inspired by newsreel footage of the Second World War.
A long standing favourite of Sir Colin's, it is a work he first conducted at the Proms all of 50 years ago. The biggest piece is Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony, in which the composer grapples with a malign Fate and, in his coruscating finale, makes use of a well-known Russian folk song. Before the interval, Ravel's exotic, ambiguous Shéhérazade is sung by Susan Graham, a supreme interpreter of the cycle.
