Known principally for his portraits of court beauties, Peter L
ely was England’s leading painter from the period of the Civil War to the r
eign of Charles II. This exhibition focuses on the artist's all but forgott
en early paintings which depict a sensuous pastoral world of shepherds, ny
mphs and musicians, painted during the turmoil of the English Civil War an
d its aftermath. In addition to achieving renown as a painter, Lely amasse
d one of England’s first great collections of drawings. A display of a sele
ction of drawings from Lely’s collection will be on view, alongside his ow
