Joanna McGregor's DeLoitte Ignite Festival closes with MONASTER Y OF SOUND 70 minutes with interval www.roh.org.uk "Their sacred, anci ent world is filled with the chanting of Buddhist texts and recitation of m antras, the ringing of bells and clash of cymbals, the booming of great l ong horns and beating of drums. Tibetan monks from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery i n India offer a dramatic presentation of their sacred dances, music, pray ers and ceremonies: a feast both for the eyes and ears, in their extraordi nary traditional costumes. Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, founded by the first D alai Lama in the 15th Century, and the seat of the Panchen Lama, is one o f the most important monasteries in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Now re -established in exile in South India, the monastery is once again becomingone of the major centres of learning, best known for its artistic traditi on of masked dances and sacred music. This performance offers a rare oppor tunity to witness a unique and endangered culture."
