New Music CDs Round-Up 14

Including Neil Young, Kings of Leon, Chocolate Genius and Elvis Costello

Kings of Leon: Casting their net wider

This month's epic collection has a somewhat retro feel, with CDs by Ray Davies, Neil Young, Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan. The CD of the Month is all-conquering Tennessee rock band Kings of Leon. The Box Set of the Month comes from the vaults of Apple records and there's an amazing compilation of music from Angola in the 1970s. The rest of the selection is bang up to the minute, with the latest electronica, jazz, grime and alt-country dissected by theartsdesk's team of critics, Adam Sweeting, Howard Male, Russ Coffey, Joe Muggs, David Cheal, Peter Quinn, Thomas H Green, Bruce Dessau, Kieron Tyler and Peter Culshaw.

The more you listen to Come Around Sundown, the better you understand where Kings of Leon have always been coming from

Once again Neil Diamond proves what a master showman he is, holding the audience in the palm of his hand with strong delivery of his sizeable catalogue of songs with just enough of his new cover material on display to show what an impressive interpreter of song he is also. His rich baritone has lost none of it's raw power to move and none more poignant than his self introspective I am...I said. It would be easy to dismiss Diamond as MOR schmaltz but that would be missing the point. In truth Neil Diamond has been at the pinnacle of the music landscape for nigh on fifty years creating a body of work which has stood above and beyond the test of time and has been covered by many of his contemporarys. could it be that this Diamond is forever.
