Competition: Sarah Willis horn CDs to give away
We’ve got some CDs to give away, a recording of French horn music by Sarah Willis, the First Lady of the French Horn, who is also second horn in the Berlin Philharmonic. Our interview with Sarah in early September has proved to be one of the most popular pieces on theartsdesk.
She talked about stepping out of the regimental line of male horn players in the Berlin Phil to make her first solo recording. Trio! features music for horn, violin and piano, including a recording of Brahms’s matchless horn trio which Graham Rickson reviewing for theartsdesk described as “the best modern-instrument recording of the piece I’ve heard”. It goes without saying that it would make a very good Christmas present to lovers of the French horn and/or Brahms (very hard to be one without being the other).
We would like to give readers the chance to win a copy of Trio! theartsdesk has eight CDs to give away. Your task is to supply the correct answer to four questions. You will find the information you need by following the links and reading carefully.
- What is the make and model of the instrument on which Sarah Willis recorded the Brahms horn trio?
- How many times did Dennis Brain perform the Brahms horn trio at the National Gallery in the war?
- Brahms composed the horn trio for a natural horn. What was his dismissive name for the valved horn?
- Which wind instrument did the Berlin Philharmonic horn section switch to at their open-air concert this summer?
Please email your answers to quiz@theartsdesk.com by the end of Monday, 13 December, labelling the email "Sarah Willis CD" in the subject field. We’ll pick the eight correct answers out of a hat and get back to the winners.
