Hilary Hahn & Hauschka: Video Exclusive
Exclusive first view of gorgeous "post-classical" video
We're extremely happy to have the first viewing of this beautiful video by Grammy-nominated director Eric Epstein for Hilary Hahn and Hauschka's “Draw a Map”. Its perhaps the most completely realised audio-visual summing up of the area of music that is becoming known as post-classical: that is, music that uses the techniques and instruments of the classical tradition but is not constrained by the classical world's commercial and social strictures.
Watch "Draw a Map":
Hauschka, aka Volker Bertelmann, is a composer and pianist whose music has always drawn on the techno and world music played in dance clubs of his native Düsseldorf as much as from any composers. His solo records have come out on the British FatCat imprint, which was originally a techno/electronica label before diversifying into folk, psychedelia, alternative rock and eventually “post-classical”, for which they formed the sub-label 130701.
Hilary Hahn is a renowned violinist who has played with major orchestras worldwide, but also folk and rock bands including the infamous ...And You Shall Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. Together, she and Hauschka are releasing the album Silfra on Deutsche Grammophon, recorded with producer Valgeir Sigurðsson (Björk, Sigur Rós, Feist) in Iceland, and deliberately blurring composition and improvisation. It is, frankly, brilliant. Along with the likes of Ólafur Arnalds, Swod, Peter Broderick, Nils Frahm, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Nico Muhly, the NonClassical label/club and many more, the opening up of possibilities this represents is extremely exciting.
