Arts Jobs - -
Conservator
With external funding from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, we are very pleased to be able to create two new positions for mima.
mima, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art is an educational and cultural institution. mima presents a changing programme of exhibitions across its galleries covering the beginnings of 20th century art to the present day, bringing the best to Middlesbrough and presenting our regions best to the rest of the world. mima exhibits and collects both fine art and craft, and is unique in the UK in that it presents the two side by side. This includes a range of highly established artists, emerging artists, and regional, national and international artists.
In addition to responsibility for the wider conservation management of mima’s collections, one of the key responsibilities of this role is the launch and testing of a conservation services business model. The post holder of this position would be expected to use the one year of part time employment to develop and test out a business case for whether the position can move towards being self-financing in future years, ensuring continued conservation support at mima, through providing an outward facing conservation framing service to other venues, organisations and artists. In addition to paid work the post holder would also be expected to develop relationships with other bodies of conservation expertise across the wider region developing quid pro quo arrangements.
mima is currently funded by Middlesbrough Council and Arts Council and forms part of Middlesbrough Museums & Galleries service alongside the Dorman Museum and the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum. The Conservator post will be positioned within the curatorial team, working alongside the Senior Curator and Curator, with responsibility to the Senior Curator.
