New York star Ashley Bouder gives contemporary insight into ballet via her iPhone

How does a ballerina feel during Swan Lake? Find out instantaneously from the New York ballerina who tweets while she dances. Ashley Bouder is one of the most exciting dancers of the new generation over there - and new-generation she is.

According to Gia Kourlas’s article in the New York Times today, Ashley’s iPhone is her closest partner, and her constant twittering is opening up a new understanding of a leading dance-artist’s life. So what did the Swan Queen tweet the other day as she magically flew off the stage and prepared to change into the black tutu of her wicked doppelganger? “Odette act II was ok today, mild foot cramps though. Yuck yuck. Onto odile. Going for evil sexy tonight ;)”

It isn’t Keats or Shakespeare - either of whom would be needed to pay worthy tribute to Bouder’s thrilling dancing, as enjoyed by London audiences two years ago on a very rare visit from New York City Ballet. Unfortunately her live intermission tweets are also exceedingly rare. Mostly, like anybody else on Twitter, Ashley tweets about her dogs, haircuts, the weather and her friends - such as Rufus Wainwright, for instance.

She's more revealing on this New York City Ballet video where she, Tiler Peck and Kathryn Morgan - another Twitterer - talk about dancing The Sleeping Beauty:
