Colin Davis brings his habitual brisk elegance to Figaro. Pity the cast didn't get the memo

The opening night of Le nozze di Figaro was not so much an opera of two halves as an opera of two teams. In the pit we had Sir Colin Davis and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House offering a crisply incisive rendering of Mozart’s score; onstage we had the Royal Opera Chorus and a selection of soloists, most of whom seemed set on a rather different – and, in the case of the chorus, downright lacklustre – rendition of the score. Now on its second revival, David McVicar’s all-the-hallmarks-of-a-classic production should have the comfortable swagger of a sophomore, but it was the first-night nerves of an untried fresher which were painfully evident at last night’s performance.

Amazed you like Sir Colin's ponderous approach to Mozart. The gulf between his Figaro (and Don Giovanni) and Mackerras's in the past few years has become all too apparent: Mackerras is sprightly and always finds the right tempo, and I don't know what's going on with the other elder statesman these days.

I attended today (3rd July) and I agree with the inaudibility of Eri Nakamura; only during recits were her words clear. She doesn't have the vocal power or stamina to play Susanna - certainly in a house as big as the ROH. I felt somewhat cheated; having paid over £100 for a ticket, one of the pivotal roles was played by someone so weak. In fact the cast was very uneven, with some outstanding performances (the review didn't mention Marie McLaughlin's outstanding Marcellina) and very, very weak ones....
